Whether it’s peak summer or winter for you, you're following Gold Cup or Club World Cup, or you’re already deep into those Fantrax mock drafts, there’s never a bad time to start thinking about how to level up your Fantasy EPL league.
We play one of the longest and most demanding fantasy formats in any sport. That grind, week after week for nine months, means keeping things fresh and fun isn’t optional. It’s everything. You care about your league, and want it to be more than just points and standings. The best Fantasy EPL leagues thrive on more than good picks. They’re built on rivalries, rituals, banter, and unique rules that keep managers hooked. But even great leagues can go stale. Ghost teams creep in. The group chat dies. That’s where a few smart tweaks can make all the difference. Most of these ideas presented here come from my home league, now entering its 10th season, battle-tested, argued over, and mostly beloved.
So whether you’re the commissioner, the chaos agent, or just want to keep things lively, this is your off-season playbook for all Draft Premier League styles. From clever rule changes to spicy punishments and ways to lock in engagement, here are 9 proven ways to make next season your best yet!

Nine Ideas to Improve Your EPL Draft League Next Season
I've got 9 tested ideas to improve your Fantasy EPL Draft leagues next season, whether you're a seasoned manager or a first-time drafter, there's something here for everyone. Let's dive in!
Idea 1: Maintain a banter-filled group chat
What’s kept my home league alive and kicking more than anything else? Our chaotic, relentless WhatsApp group chat. There’s nothing like going for a run or cooking dinner, only to come back to 300 unread messages, most of them nonsense, some hopefully vaguely related to the league or week's matches... But that’s the magic. Whether you’re on WhatsApp, Discord, or iMessage, a lively chat is the beating heart of any league. It’s where legends are born, rivalries simmer, and every boneheaded transfer gets its moment in the court of public shame.
This is all especially true in leagues where managers aren’t watching games together in person; The chat keeps everyone connected. It builds culture, fuels banter, and keeps even the bottom-dwellers emotionally invested until the final whistle.
Idea 2: Maintain some form of 'side pot'
I firmly believe in giving managers more ways to earn back a bit of cash for all the time, research, and emotional energy we pour into this long-haul format. One of my favorite additions to our home league has been the introduction of the “Pie Pot.” The concept is simple and savage: if you beat someone by 75+ points in a gameweek, your unlucky opponent owes $5 to the Pie Pot. At the end of the season, the manager who’s “Pied” the most people takes home the whole thing. Last season was our first run, and the winner pocketed a smooth $35, not life-changing, but it adds tension, banter, and an incentive to stay sharp every week. Nobody wants to take a fat L, cough up $5, and get clowned in the group chat all in one go.
Another great variation: rewarding the weekly highest scorer. Whether it’s $1, $2, or more, it gives high-performing managers a little win even in unlucky seasons when they’re somehow stuck in mid-table despite strong weekly scores. These side pots inject energy into every gameweek and help keep the whole table engaged from August to May.
Idea 3: Mid-Season Tournaments
One thing’s clear: Draft Premier League seasons are long. So why wait until the end to have some cup fun? Mid-season tournaments are a great way to keep things fresh.Last year, our league ran a Boxing Day Cup, one Gameweek, highest scores across matchups wins. First place got 50 FAAB, second got 25, and third took 10. Simple, competitive, and a great way to spice things up when maybe some league mates are all home for the holidays.
Worried about uneven matchups? Try a one-week redraft, or limit picks to players under a certain roster %, a fun challenge that rewards creativity. Platforms like Fantrax even let you run separate matchups, so you can create a knockout tourney that runs alongside your league. However you spin it, a mid-season competition adds energy when your league needs it most.
Idea 4: History books
Creating a dedicated space outside of Fantrax to track your league’s full history is a smart move, especially for those quick fact-checks during mid-season debates. This can include final standings, playoff results, standout performances, and your league’s complete trophy cabinet. But it’s more than just stats; it captures the story of your league’s epic moments, fierce rivalries, and unforgettable drama.
A centralized “league history” keeps everyone invested by celebrating past glories and reminding managers what’s on the line each season. It’s also the perfect place to record funny moments, hilarious trade fails, or MVP-worthy performances that deserve to live on beyond the final whistle.
You can track all-time records like highest points in a Gameweek, biggest blowouts, or head-to-head stats, too. I keep mine split between a Discord chat for banter and a detailed spreadsheet for the numbers—both work great for keeping the league’s legacy alive and kicking.
Idea 5: Leadership & League Governance
Having a reliable commissioner, or better yet, two co-commissioners, is crucial for keeping your league running smoothly week after week. They handle everything from managing trades, tricky waiver windows, and resolving disputes to keeping the schedule on track and making sure everyone stays engaged. But the real magic happens during the off-season with a summer “league summit.” This is where all managers come together to review what worked, what didn’t, and what new ideas to try next season. It’s democracy in action, everyone gets a voice, and decisions are made collectively to keep the league fair, fun, and evolving. A strong leadership team combined with open communication sets the foundation for a thriving league year after year.
Idea 6: Change how you reward the season's winners
The two most common ways to crown a Fantasy EPL champion are either by awarding the title to the team with the best overall season score or by running a playoff at the end of the season.
For those coming from American fantasy football, myself included, the idea of playoffs during the last 2–3 weeks is what's typically done. Maybe your league currently runs a top-6 playoff, with the top 2 teams earning byes. Maybe you prefer to skip playoffs altogether and simply crown the winner after Gameweek 38 based on total points in the league standings.
Why not have the best of both worlds? That’s what we do in my home league: split the prize pot between the season-long top spots and the playoff champion. It’s a great compromise for managers who like the excitement of playoffs but don’t want the entire season riding on a late double Gameweek or a last-minute blank. Chat with your league mates and find the setup that fits your style.
Here’s a sample payout breakdown from our $125 buy-in league for next season to get an idea:
League
1st: $450
2nd: $300
3rd: $175
4th: $125
Cup
1st: $300
2nd: $150
Idea 7: Live Draft Party
Most appropriate idea as we approach the ever exciting draft season: Make draft day an event to be celebrated! Whether it's in someone’s living room with beers and a whiteboard or at a pub with Wi-Fi and pint glasses, drafting in real time with your league mates is a game-changer. It sets the tone for the entire season. You get the live reactions to wild picks, the panic as the clock ticks down, and the smug satisfaction of sniping someone’s sleeper target right before their turn.
It’s also a rare moment where the whole league feels connected, especially in online leagues where most of the season is played virtually. If you can pull off even half the league together in person, do it. Personally this will be our first year taking organizing draft day in person seriously. Heck, I'm paying for a flight for it and spending the morning making the board! Bonus points if you have a unique idea to determine draft order. Double bonus points if you determine draft order the day of!
Idea 8: Custom stats
Step out of the world of default settings and into the creative playground of custom stats. One of the easiest ways to add flavor and depth to your league is by taking advantage of the customization tools platforms like Fantrax offer. Want to give goalkeepers 100 points for scoring? Go for it. Boost defenders by tweaking their scoring bonuses? Absolutely. Reward players for drawing penalties? Why not. You can also shake things up structurally, adjust bench size, add an IR spot, or even scrap the 60-minute clean sheet rule. The options are endless. Just remember: while it’s fun to get creative, don’t stray so far that the core of the game gets lost. Find the sweet spot where innovation meets balance.
Idea 9: Fantasy Punishments
This is one I've been trying to get going in my home league for a while! Let’s be honest, nothing keeps a league engaged like a well-crafted punishment. Think going live and doing an embarrassing TikTok style dance, dressing up in a rival kit for a day, buying everyone drinks at the pub, or maybe being the draft day butler. The key is keeping it lighthearted but memorable, something that stings just enough to motivate, without crossing the line. A good punishment not only keeps managers active all season, it becomes part of your league’s lore.
Parting Thoughts
No matter how competitive your league is, or how deep your love for Fantasy EPL runs, keeping things fresh and fun is what makes the difference between a forgettable season and one you’ll talk about for years. Whether you try out a mid-season tournament, shake up the rules, or introduce new traditions, these tweaks create moments that keep managers engaged and hungry for more.
At the end of the day, fantasy football is about community, rivalry, and the joy of the game, not just the points. So get creative, get your league involved, and make next season your most memorable yet.
