23/24 Newcastle Player Performance

Let's review how Newcastle players fared in 23/24, with an emphasis on their Draft Premier League fantasy assets. We'll also discuss any pertinent info regarding rotation, managerial tactics, and injuries below. What can we learn from their performance in the last campaign?

Anthony Gordon was the standout player for Newcastle last season, nearly a top 10 asset. But more on him later. Newcastle did, however, have 3 assets in the top 25 and 6 assets with 10+ points per start. Bruno G had a strong finish to the season to become a top 15 asset, but it really was a season of two halves for him. It remains to be seen if he can keep this kind of form next season, but he would need to top 7 goals and 9 total assists to do that. His ghost points put him at a steady 8.3 gpps but that certainly doesn't warrant a top 20 pick. There were many questions about Isak vs. Wilson this season, but in the end it was Isak who showed his value, and is subject to a lot of transfer rumours because of that. If Isak does stay at Newcastle, there is no reason he can't match or even top his performance of last season. Wilson only managed 10 starts with the majority of his good performances being from the bench, a role you should expect him to continue in next season.

It is worth noting Murphy and the value he provided when called upon. While he isn't going to be first choice next season, he could be a good late round punt in case of a move, or being needed due to another injury. Joelinton had a fantastic start to the season but had an injury that really derailed his season. With 16 starts to his name and just 8.2 PPS he will go under the radar next season, but a starting role in the attacking midfield could make him a sleeper.

In defence, Trippier was the star of the show with 12.1 PPS and 11.1 Gpps. The only downside with Trippier was that he only started 25 games. As he gets up there in age, his fitness will continue to be a concern, but if you can get 32+ games of Tripps, there is no reason he can't be a top 15 overall player and battle Trent for the top defender spot. No other defender really stood out; Burn and Schar both provided decent value here and there but neither really raised any eyebrows to make them worth a top 50 pick next season with their PPS under 8 points. With the new scoring though, they are definitely worth a later round pick if they last that long, and will make for good streamers when they are inevitably dropped during the year. Hall is one to monitor; if he can get a more consistent role, he could be a sneakier pick in the later rounds as a DEF 3, given his 8.4 PPS in 8 starts.

23/24 Breakout Player

Anthony Gordon

Position: Midfielder

23/24 Points: 461.5 (7th best MID)

23/24 Points Per Start: 12.6 (34 starts)

ree

It is no surprise that Gordon takes this mantle given the season he had. This was definitely his breakout season and he performed better than anyone may have expected. He finished with 11 goals, 10 assists and a PPS of 12.6. The only downside was his 7.4 ghost points per start, leaving a bit to be desired. Gordon was the key creative outlet for Newcastle, and helped bag some goals as well. With question marks over what he could have done last season, there was doubt heading into the draft. This season, there will be no doubts. He will continue to be a top fantasy asset as he continues to grow into life at Newcastle.

Gordon will be a guaranteed starter with only an injury or suspension keeping him out of the XI. With Joelinton back to full health and Barnes expected to take on a bigger role, I do think the Newcastle attack improves even more. Isak staying would be huge as well for this team, coming off of a 21 goal season and hoping to contend for the Golden Boot next season. Gordon will have fewer competitions as well this season with Newcastle out of Europe, and break into becoming a true first round asset.

23/24 Fantasy Flop

Miguel Almiron

Position: Midfielder

23/24 Points: 158.5 (69th best MID)

23/24 Points Per Start: 6.1 (23 starts)

ree

Almiron failed to replicate his 22/23 "dream" season and only contributed 3 goals and 1 assist in his 23 starts for Newcastle. Almiron commanded a draft pick somewhere between the 6th-8th round last year, but ended up being droppable. He suffered a few injuries throughout the year, but really just never found a run of game as he did in the previous season. His 6.1 PPS and 4.6 GPPS made him a poor stream even in desperate times. He only managed to crack 10 points in 5/23 of his starts, which is very disappointing for a starting winger on a top 10 team. In fact, he managed to score fewer than 3 points in more starts than those in which he got double digits (8/23). Almiron seems like a nice guy but he just wasn't the same player last season.

There will be a lot of question marks over the role that Almiron will have next season. He did himself no favours with the kind of season he had with Barnes waiting in the wings and rumours of Bowen being looked at by Newcastle. Speaking of Barnes, he was a worth candidate for this segment given his very poor season: 6.1 PPS across just 7 starts. His ghost points were almost unheard of as well at 3.6. It is really no shock that Newcastle are in for another winger given the lack of consistency both Almiron and Barnes have. It is clear Newcastle is interested in a 3rd player to try and crack 10 goals, and this could cause Almiron to see himself as a bench player. We will look into his potential role further in the Forecast but don't expect him to be a recommended draft pick.

Injury Impact

Newcastle faced a few major injuries this season, especially to Barnes, Joelinton, Wilson, Lascelles, Botman, Willock, and Pope. Isak, Almiron and Trippier also missed a chunk of games through injuries. When you look at this list, there are some key players here and a 7th place finish is not too bad at all. If all these assets stayed fit all season, you would think Newcastle could have challenged for the top 4 again. A lot of these players are defenders, which probably contributed to their poor defensive record. Pope, especially, was a huge loss given the talent he has and that he has shown he can single-handedly keep clean sheets.

A lot of rotational players did step up, though, with Murphy being one of those key names. With a more secure midfield next season with Joelinton and Willock being fit again, I would expect Newcastle to improve as a whole. With new signings being looked at as well, Newcastle are clearly looking to have quality depth given some of the injury prone assets they have on their books.

Newcastle United's Overall Team Performance

Last season Newcastle finished 7th place scoring 85 goals and conceding 62. Their attack was 4th best in the league just under the top 3, but it was their defence that was their weak point. Newcastle competed on multiple fronts including in the Champions League, which could be part of the reason for their "poorer" performances. A lot of people expected Newcastle to be in the top 4 again, but that was not the case. They finished 8 points back of Aston Villa, despite a strong finish to the season. They started to put things together too late for it to matter unfortunately.

Some of their players had very good seasons including Gordon and Isak, who will be expected to be the focal points for next season. And rumours are swirling around Newcastle wanting to buy Bowen or another player to start on the right to complete their attack. Expect some rumoured names in the defensive department as well with the depth there lacking and Lascelles above the age of 30 now. More will be discussed in the forecast, but when a 7th place finish is considered a bad season, expectations will be high for the Magpies next season.
