23/24 Nottingham Forest Player Performance

Let's review how Nottingham Forest players fared in 23/24, with an emphasis on their Draft Premier League fantasy assets. We'll also discuss any pertinent info regarding rotation, managerial tactics, and injuries below. What can we learn from their performance in the last campaign?

There weren't many highlights for Forest in the 23/24 season, but Morgan Gibbs-White's consistent talismanic performances both in real life and on the fantasy pitch were definitely worth taking note of. 415.5 points were enough to propel him to 13th overall and top 10 for midfielders at the end of the season. He led his team in assists, G+A, points, points per start, key passes, accurate crosses, successful dribbles and total set pieces taken. The Swiss army knife, jack of all trades, the leader, the head honcho; you can call him whatever you want, he outshone his teammates by a country mile.

The chasm after MGW when talking about fantasy player value would be enormous were it not for the much less consistent, but all the more exciting attacking triplet of Elanga, Hudson-Odoi and Wood. The wingers, Elanga and CHO were both pretty good examples of patchy/boom-or-bust players, as both produced exciting spells. Take, for example, CHO's heroics in February during which he accumulated 3 goals from 4 starts, and (if you count his 2nd March outing) 4 double-digit returns in 5. He only had 3 double digit returns all season before coming into February. As we said... #patchy. Elanga was much of the same, ending the calendar year with 5 double-digit scores in the last 9, but aside from a few flashes, could not sustain steady form. Exciting, yes. Reliable, no. Honourable mention in the positives goes to Big Willy Boly, who rolled back the years and, while he missed a huge chunk of the middle of the season through injury, he did end up with a very impressive 9.5 points per start. This was propped up, by his godlike 9.9 ghost points per 90 (only bested by TAA, Trips, Robbo and Tarks among defenders).

It was not all fantasy heroics though, when one looks at Forest players. Aside from Awoniyi, no other player reached 8 PPS and therefore were all stuck in permanent streamer territory. Neco Williams's, Harry Toffolo's and Nico Dominguez's decent one-off performances were nowhere near consistent enough for them to be rostered throughout the season, and the less said about others, the better.

23/24 Breakout Player

Chris Wood

Position: Forward

23/24 Points: 258.5 (25th best FWD)

23/24 Points Per Start: 12.3 (20 starts)

When Wood moved to Newcastle under new ownership explicitly to weaken his former club and, therefore, help the Geordies avoid relegation, it looked like the lanky kiwi might have destined himself to warming the bench the rest of his career. Fast forward to the 23/24 season, and our protagonist has moved to Forest in search of opportunities, only to be stuck on a less comfortable bench under Steve Cooper, seemingly forgotten. Even his brace against Luton wasn't enough to get him a run in the first team. On the 19th of December, Cooper was sacked by Forest and Wood grabbed his opportunity with both hands. Managers who picked him up during Christmas shopping know exactly what I am talking about! He ended up scoring 11 of his final 14 goals of the season during the period under Nuno Espirito Santo, made even more impressive when you consider that he missed 5 games during that period through injury. A true comeback story if ever I have seen one.

23/24 Fantasy Flop

Taiwo Awoniyi

Position: Forward

23/24 Points: 133 (51st best FWD)

23/24 Points Per Start: 8.8 (12 starts)

Awoniyi ended the 22/23 season scoring 6 goals in the last 4 games of the season and potentially winning his fantasy managers a fair few titles. So, the fact that he started the season as the first choice striker at Forest was no surprise. He continued his fine form with 3 goals and 2 assists in the first 5 games of the season and people were CAPITAL LETTERS EXCITED! He ended up scoring a grand total of 3 more goals and notching 1 more assist for the rest of the season. The only way was down for the Nigerian striker. He missed most of the winter period due to a groin issue and by the time he got healthy again, a certain New Zealander was producing magic in his place. His misery was compounded by a rumoured nasty argument with the manager, which may have contributed to a total of 4 measly starts under him.

Injury Impact

Forest were largely spared serious injuries to their most important players. MGW started 35 games and, as mentioned before, Awoniyi's injury coincided with Wood's resurrection, so the team was able to cope. The injury to Willy Boly was probably the most transformative one with regards to their results. Forest ended up being the 3rd "luckiest" team injury-wise in all the land.

Nottingham Forest Overall Team Performance

Forest avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth, effectively by beating Burnley and Sheffield United in the last 3 fixtures of the season. Although they were deducted 4 points due to financial irregularities, they would have still finished 17th had those points not been taken away. Steve Cooper was sacked after GW17 having only managed 3 wins and 3 draws in that spell. Nuno Espirito Santo, aided by Nuno Mendes came in to steady the ship and after 2 wins in his first 3, people were ready to jump on board. With 4 more wins ROS, he took his overall tally to 6 wins for the season, meaning he was able to double his predecessor's tally.

If one dives deeper into their season's statistics, it is hard to argue that they were unlucky to some extent to be dragged into a relegation fight. Their attacking and defensive numbers both position them as a lower mid-table team, which is a great sign that they are hopefully building for the future.
