Ross Barkley
Position: Central midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Aston Villa
Signed From: Luton for £6m
Prospects: Barkley had a remarkable English career turnaround for Luton last season at the ripe age of 30. He had 9 returns,10.4 PP90, and 8.4 GPP90 in 30 starts for the eventually relegated side but earned rave reviews and even some infrequent England shouts from his work in the center of the park. In come Emery's Villa, often buyers of older talents (see Tielemans, Coutinho, Carlos, and Torres) to keep his talents in the top-flight. For Luton Town, Barkley most often played as part of a midfield 2, next to a more defensive-minded option. He offered little out of possession, but much with the ball, in the form of dribbles, shots, and key passes. If he can keep his levels up, Barkley's value this season will mostly likely be predominantly a function of how many starts he gets under Emery. In the center of the park, even after losing stalwart Douglas Luiz, the Villans are fairly crowded. Returning from injury, there's Kamara, Buendia, and Ramsey. There's captain McGinn (35 starts last season) & Tielemans (17 starts). There's newly signed CM, Onana from Everton and DM, Barrenechea, and even Dendoncker still kicking. Plus, loads of attacking options. Still, Luiz off to Juve leaves 35 starts up for grabs and Barkley is coming off a great season where he offered something different from central midfield that Villa's other options have no proven history of: goal contributions. If Emery can put up with Barkley's defensive deficiencies and perhaps partner him with a complementing, fit-again Kamara or Onana or play him further forward, his starts could soar and fantasy points along with them. Or he could be a rotational mid, like Tielemans last year, likely with better PPS, who's used more so in easier matchups. Regardless, his upside is undeniable after doing it in a worse team last season. Depending on how bullish you are on his starts this season, we think 8th round and later could be good value for Barkley.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yankuba Minteh
Position: Winger (F in Fantrax)
Team: Brighton
Signed From: Newcastle for £35m
Prospects: Minteh is the first of many youth victims of PSR shenanigans on this list. But unlike many of the others, he looks likely to make his former club regret their sale rather quickly. The 19yo right winger lit up the stat sheet for Feyenoord last season in the Dutch Eredivisie. He performed well in the 99th percentile for non-penalty goals (0.62 p90), npxG+xA (0.87 p90), shots on target (1.5 p90), successful take-ons (3.7 p90), and tackles (2.8 p90) in 17 starts. In limited UCL & UEL minutes (only 310), he put up 14.6 PP90 and 13.1 GPP90 (much inflated by sub apps). His Dutch stats would undoubtedly be even greater if calculated, but he did play for a top 2 team in the league, new Liverpool man, Arne Slot's Feyenoord. So how will it translate? Time and time again, we've seen successful Dutch league players with impressive stats (Antony, Sinisterra, Madueke) come over to the Prem and struggle to adapt and reproduce at high levels. But it's important to remember that Minteh did this all in his first season of football in the Netherlands aged only 19. His rise has been rapid, and his fee (a record high for the smart, stingy Seagulls) reflects that. The big question now becomes whether Minteh will be able to crack Brighton's starting XI for new manager Hurzeler, amongst a plethora of attacking bodies. His 2 biggest competitors for the right wing spot appear to be Simon Adingra (who started 25 times last season, 14 at RW) & Solly March. Buonanotte (11 or so starts at RW) and other attackers are capable of playing there as well, but it appears likely to mostly be a 3 way battle. March is still returning from a long-term injury and may not be fit to start the season (or at least at 100%), so if Minteh can play well in preseason (which he has so far) and unseat Adingra in the beginning of the year, he has the opportunity for a lot of starts. Or he could struggle to adapt and purely be a rotational streamer. Still the statistical profile lends itself to a fun upside punt for what should be a fun attacking team. Take him in the 9th round or beyond.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Igor Thiago
Position: Striker (F in Fantrax)
Team: Brentford
Signed From: Club Brugge for £37m
Prospects: Amendment 7/25/24: It was just announced by Brentford that Thiago suffered a meniscus injury during preseason that will undergo scans soon to determine severity. Until we learn more, I would not draft Thiago before the 12th round. The 23yo Brazilian striker was signed by the Bees all the way back in February, as some pre-emptive squad planning in the case of an expected Ivan Toney departure. Brentford's record signing has had an unconventional rise to the top, with 2 seasons in Brazil's second tier, followed by another 2 in Bulgaria's First League, and finally a smashing season for Brugge in Belgium's Pro League A. He scored 16 goals and had 2 assists in 20 90's in Belgium and had another 5 and 1 in 8 90's in the Conference League. He does not profile as a particularly dynamic, high volume attacker, but he is certainly a menace in the box (touches, runs, aerials, goals) and out of possession (96th percentile for tackles, 99th pctile for blocks amongst strikers). And just like the man he might replace, he's a great penalty taker. So, where that leaves us, in the best case scenario, is a Toney-lite striker in a team that really needs to fill a Toney-sized hole with goals. In the worst case scenario, Toney's transfer saga and unlikely contract renewal drag on and Thiago is stuck having to back-up, or play alongside the man he's meant to replace. Let's see how this develops in the coming weeks, but if Toney does leave, 8th round onwards feels healthy for the Brazilian. See Amendment Above.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ian Maatsen
Position: Attacking full back (D in Fantrax)
Team: Aston Villa
Signed From: Chelsea for £45m *PSR swap
Prospects: The 22yo attacking left back never got a proper chance at Chelsea (when many think he should have last season) and was exiled to a fairly successful loan at Dortmund. They didn't want to pay up for his permanent transfer, though and thus he ended up in a PSR swap with Villa. At Dortmund, he scored 2 goals and 2 assists in 15 Bundesliga starts and put up 9.2 PPS and 5.5 GPPS. The year prior, with Burnley in the Championship, he had 10 returns in 38 starts and 9.9 PPS and 7 GPPS. Certainly not incredible stats for an attacking full back, but solid, nonetheless. The case for Maatsen is really the situation in which he landed. Emery favors an asymmetrical back line, with an attacking left back bombing forward in possession, with the right back often staying back. Lucas Digne & Alex Moreno have previously occupied that slot capably, but Maatsen offers a much younger, higher-ceiling new option for Emery to use. If he can add more attacking prowess and fantasy points on top of Digne's 8 GPP90 or Moreno's 7.1 GPP90 last season, he should be a useful upside defender in most matchups. How quickly he can wrestle control of that starting left back spot is the key question here (and whether Digne or Moreno end up departing Villa). 9th round or beyond feels a healthy punt for a rare, possible attacking full back on a quality team with questionable opportunity.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Daichi Kamada
Position: Attacking midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Crystal Palace
Signed From: Lazio for free (£18m value on Transfermarkt)
Prospects: Kamada has been rumored to the Prem for years, but finally his former Frankfurt manager, Glasner brings him to Palace. The 27yo is an attacking midfielder who has both played as a narrow 10 (like in Glasner's favored formation) and more recently as a box to box mid in a flat 2 or 3. While he's a well-rounded midfielder, with above-average numbers in almost every statistical category, he does not do any one particular, fantasy-relevant thing, at an excellent level. As a result, even in his most well-regarded season under Glasner in 21-22, when he had 9 goals and 6 assists in 25 starts, he put up 10.1 PPS and 6.2 GPPS, with 2.2 of that 10 coming from set pieces (penalties and corners). This past season, without set pieces, he scored 7.8 PPS and 6.3 GPPS for Lazio (and had similar numbers in years prior at Frankfurt). Assuming Eze stays, he'll likely keep his right-footed sets away from Kamada, and Mateta will stick on pens. Competition for starts may also prove a challenge for Kamada, with Palace rumored to be interested in signing the younger Ismailla Sarr as well, and Jordan Ayew still knocking around for now(who did start 30 times last season). Olise and Eze may have given us an inflated view of Palace attackers, particularly from a stat-sheet filling perspective, but Kamada looks to be a significant step down, perhaps more comparable to the elder Ayew from a Fantrax perspective. Being bullish on Glasner's Palace is a popular take these days, even with Olise gone, but Kamada will need to be amongst the goals often to prove valuable this season. He's a reasonable punt in the 10th round (pick 105) and beyond, but I wouldn't get caught reaching, unless Eze leaves.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Omari Hutchinson
Position: Winger/Attacking midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Ipswich Town
Signed From: Chelsea for £24m
Prospects: The 21yo attacker honed his craft in the Arsenal youth teams before being poached away to Chelsea, where he was then sent on loan last season to Ipwsich in the Championship. He was quite effective there playing as a creative hub across left wing, right wing, and the 10. He scored 10 goals and had 4 assists in 24 combined 90's and put up 10.4 PPS and 7 GPPS (but 14.3 PP90 and 9.3 GPP90 when including some effective sub apps). How that'll translate to the Prem is the big question. Ipswich are 2nd favorites to be relegated currently, but did manage to keep their esteemed manager, Kieran McKenna. They're amidst making significant upgrades to their starting XI, but it still seems unlikely to be enough. As a result, Ipswich's attack is expected to be about half as effective (say 45 goals vs their 92 last season), so Hutchinson's numbers should take a significant hit. He's a hard worker defensively and accrues tackles & interceptions well on top of his attacking contributions so he'll have some floor but will most likely be a heavily matchup-dependent midfielder where you're chasing goal-return upside. I like him as a 12th round punt and beyond, but do be warned, Ipswich start the season with Liverpool, then City away.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Ibrahim Osman
Position: Winger (F in Fantrax)
Team: Brighton
Signed From: Nordsjaelland for £20m
Prospects: Another young, promising attacker for Brighton from parts (largely) unknown. Osman is a 19yo Ghanaian left-sided attacker coming from the Danish Superliga where he had 13 returns in 23 90's. He had the most shots, successful take-ons, touches in the box, and fouls won in the final third. As with all Brighton prospects, there remains a large spectrum of outcomes. He could go on loan and fluster for a couple years (like Alzate), or he could go straight into starts in the Prem. when injuries occur (like Adingra, Buonanotte, etc.) This year, in particular though, there feels like an unsustainable amount of attacking talent in Brighton's preseason camp, so we'd like to see some move out on loan/sale before a late-round punt on Osman. Otherwise, he may be capped as an upside, spot streamer this season.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tosin Adarabioyo
Position: Centre back (D in Fantrax)
Team: Chelsea
Signed From: Fulham for free (£20m value on Transfermarkt)
Prospects: Former Man City prospect, the 26yo Tosin has had 4 straight good seasons for Fulham. Free agency lands him in a Blues crowded back line. He does offer more Prem experience than most of Maresca's available centre-backs and is at a seemingly similar talent level (albeit with a far lower future ceiling than the likes of Fofana, Colwill, and Badiashile). More importantly, for our purposes though, he's a reasonably competent ghost-point getter to the tune of 7.6 GPP90. It really is purely a question of starts this season, and even the most devoted Chelsea fan couldn't accurately predict the minutes split amongst their CB's at the moment. It will depend a lot on Fofana's return from injury and how the new manager rates Disasi & Badiashile comparatively.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Elliot Anderson
Position: Central midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Nottingham Forest
Signed From: Newcastle for £41m *PSR swap
Prospects: The 21yo Anderson really broke through at Newcastle last season after others' injury misfortunes (and failed betting fortunes). A pretty well-rounded central mid, he should offer Nuno a bit more attacking potency in the engine room. Still his fantasy stats have only been decent (7.9 PPS) and going to a worse team won't likely brighten them. Hope for development (and no serious injury in preseason). Late round punt.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lloyd Kelly
Position: Centre-back (D in Fantrax)
Team: Newcastle
Signed From: Bournemouth for free (£18m value on Transfermarkt)
Prospects: Kelly is your standard 25yo solid, Prem-quality, English centre-back. He does offer the ability to play full back as well. His 6.4 GPP90 for the Cherries last season likely mean he's only relevant if he gets consistent starts in a Newcastle team that keeps cleans sheets. Botman & Lascelles injuries and no Europe could make that viable early season, but Schar and Burn are still around to compete with too. Perhaps, Howe even sees him as the shorter heir-apparent to Burn in the defensive-minded pseudo LB/CB role. Let's hope not, fellow Livramento and Hall believers.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️1/2
Lucas Bergvall
Position: Central midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Tottenham
Signed From: Djurgarden for £10m
Prospects: Thought of as one of the best 18yo midfield prospects on the planet, Bergvall is a silky, creative central mid from Sweden. He's played significant minutes in the Swedish top-flight given his age and will look to lead an impressive array of Spurs youth in the coming years. Unfortunately for him, he comes into a side that still has a lot of senior talent knocking around in midfield, so he's not likely to gain Prem starts in the short to medium term. When he does though, look out (and stream him). Maddison's next injury (and Lo Celso departing) could make things interesting for Bergvall.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️1/2
Samuel Iling-Junior
Position: Winger (F in Fantrax)
Team: Aston Villa
Signed From: Juve for £14m *PSR swap
Prospects: The 20yo played predominantly as a backup, attacking left wing back for Juve. The rare Englishmen in Italy, he began his career in the Chelsea youth setup but left for Juve in 2020. Last season he gained nearly 800 senior minutes and put up impressive fantasy numbers at 12.7 PP90 and 10.5 GPP90. Gametime will be the tricky bit at Villa though, with a plethora of attacking left backs (including aforementioned, big fee Maatsen) as well as young left-sided attackers (Rogers, Philogene-Bidace, Ramsey). The most likely outcome is an infrequent spot streamer, good when he starts. Another high potential English prospect for Villa's future though.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Rodrigo Gomes
Position: Winger/Wing Back (F in Fantrax)
Team: Wolves
Signed From: Braga for £15m
Prospects: Another young Portuguese winger for Wolves, surprise, surprise. The 21yo is coming off a successful season at Estoril in Portugal though, with 14 returns (7G, 7A) in 27 90's playing as a mixture of winger and wing back. Quite impressive attacking numbers given his positioning, but he'll still face an uphill task to crack the Wolves XI with many wingers in front of him (and quite a few full/wing backs)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Luis Guilherme
Position: Winger (F in Fantrax)
Team: West Ham
Signed From: Palmeiras for £23m
Prospects: The 18yo right wing's career has barely begun, with less than a 1000 senior minutes in Brazil, but he profiles nicely as a pacy winger who can create chances well off the dribble and pass. Likely one for the future and hopefully some fleeting glimpses in sub appearances this season.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Ben Johnson
Position: Full back (D in Fantrax)
Team: Ipswich Town
Signed From: West Ham for free (£8m value on Transfermarkt)
Prospects: The 24yo right back has shown sparks on occasion playing in a variety of positions (RB, LB, CB, RW) for Moyes's West Ham but never won his manager's trust wholly. He'll look to finally get substantial minutes as the starting RB for Ipswich, but a leaky defense and historically poor ghosting don't offer much of a fantasy floor.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Lewis Dobbin
Position: Winger (F in Fantrax)
Team: Aston Villa
Signed From: Everton for £12m *PSR swap
Prospects: The 21 year old left winger leaves his youth side, Everton, after never quite cracking into the senior team, on a PSR swap deal for Iroegbunam (below). A plethora of more senior or proven attacking options for Emery, will likely leave Dobbin on the periphery again.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Tim Iroegbunam
Position: Defensive midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Everton
Signed From: Aston Villa for £11m *PSR swap
Prospects: The 21yo never got much of a chance at Villa Park but may be able to come by more minutes under Dyche at Everton, as Onana departs and Gueye ages. Still, his position likely leaves him not a fantasy asset.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Chadi Riad
Position: Centre-back (D in Fantrax)
Team: Crystal Palace
Signed From: Real Betis for £15m
Prospects: Riad played significant minutes (21 starts) in La Liga, particularly for a 21 year old. It remains to be seen whether Marc Guehi leaves Palace, but for now Riad will likely stay a backup centre-back or competing for the 3rds spot with Richards, Ward, and Clyne (if Glasner sticks with a 3 back). 5.7 GPP90 does not suggest much more useful than Guehi though, even if he were to play.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Wes Foderingham
Team: West Ham United
Signed From: Sheffield United for free (£20m value on Transfermarkt)
Prospects: The previously starting 33yo, Sheff. Utd. keeper joins the Hammers to backup Areola and Fabianski (if they both stay). Poor shot-stopping numbers for the last 3 seasons, coupled with a likely conservative tactical approach for West Ham, leave much to be desired if he did somehow come into starts.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️
Marc Guiu
Position: Striker (F in Fantrax)
Team: Chelsea
Signed From: Barcelona for £6m
Prospects: A bargain buy in Chelsea terms, Guiu is an 18yo forward who's only played 74 senior minutes (albeit for Barca). His best bet is a Broja-esque loan elsewhere.
Rating: ⭐️
Adam Lallana
Position: Central midfielder (D in Fantrax)
Team: Southampton
Signed From: Brighton for free
Prospects: The aging statesman had a surprising 13 starts last year for Brighton, but never eclipsed 63 mins in any of them. He'll run out his career as a depth mid for the Saints and hope to better his 23/24 2.8 PPS.
Rating: ⭐️
Enzo Barrenechea
Position: Defensive Midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Aston Villa
Signed From: Juve for £8m *PSR swap
Prospects: The product of an unsuccessful Weston McKennie (and Iling-Junior) swap deal for Douglas Luiz, the 23yo defensive mid, will offer cover to Kamara. His 5.4 PP90 for Juve and positional profile are uninspiring.
Rating: ⭐️
Charlie Taylor
Position: Left back/Centre Back (D in Fantrax)
Team: Southampton
Signed From: Burnley for free
Prospects: The 30yo journeyman leaves Burnley as a free agent after 7 years. Preseason suggests Martin will use him as a backup centre-back as well as a left back. He's never scored well so don't expect him to start now.
Rating: ⭐️
Odysseas Vlachodimos
Position: Goalkeeper (G in Fantrax)
Team: Newcastle
Signed From: Nottingham Forest for £24m *PSR swap
Prospects: Another inflated PSR fee nets Newcastle yet another backup goalkeeper. The 30yo Greek international will likely backup Pope and signal the end of Dubravka's time upon Tyne.
Rating: ⭐️
Eric da Silva Moreira
Position: Winger (F in Fantrax)
Team: Nottingham Forest
Signed From: Chelsea for £1.5m
Prospects: EDSM nickname aside (you heard it here first), the 18 year old right winger will be one for the future. His past is merely some solid seasons in lower tier German football.
Rating: ⭐️
Omari Kellyman
Position: Attacking midfielder (M in Fantrax)
Team: Chelsea
Signed From: Aston Villa for £23m *PSR swap
Prospects: A truly ridiculous fee for an 18 year old, with 35 minutes of senior football, to a team that has far too many attacking bodies, and many more, better prospects on the way, that was likely solely the result of PSR book balancing (and netted Maatsen for a large fee to Villa in return). 7 goals in 11 PL2 games, sign him up in Championship fantasy if he gets a loan.
Rating: ⭐️
Potentially Relevant Loan Returns
Jadon Sancho (M, MUN) - Have Ten Hag and Sancho really turned a new leaf? They'd like us to believe so. If he stays, his attacking talent (11 PPS, 9 GPPS for BVB) in what should be a good side, ought to get him some starts on the RW. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
James McAtee (M, MCI) - Back from a loan at relegated Sheff. Utd., let's see how McAtee does in preseason, and if any other City mids depart, or if he ends on a Prem loan elsewhere. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Djed Spence (D, TOT) - Promising signs in preseason, and Emerson Royal potentially out the door, could revive his career and bring him 1 injury away from the valuable starting RB role. ⭐️⭐️
Yerson Mosquera (D, WOL) - With Kilman gone, O'Neill needs bodies at CB, and he looks to be getting a chance to compete for a spot in preseason. Decent stats in La Liga (9.1 PP90, 7.2 GPP90) too. ⭐️⭐️
Fabio Carvalho (M, LIV) - Another Championship loan with good stats (12.1 PPS, 7.8 GPPS, 9 goals) leads the 21yo AM back to Pool, where he'll struggle to see minutes, but hope for a Prem loan. ⭐️⭐️
Hamed Traore (M, BOU) - Injuries and severe illness have derailed his once promising career. Another unproductive season in Serie A has done him no favors; let's see if preseason helps or he leaves. ⭐️⭐️
David Brooks (M, BOU) - A productive Championship loan for him (13.6 PP90) helped Southampton get promoted, but he's back stuck at the end of Iraola's extensive winger depth chart ⭐️⭐
Denis Undav (F, BHA) - Incessant flirting with returning to Stuttgart aside (he very likely leaves), Undav is arguably the most productive pure striker Brighton currently own (18.3 PP90). So, if he somehow stays, he's definitely worth a punt. ⭐️⭐️
Omar Richards (D, NOT) - After an injury derailed his Forest career as soon as it began (straight from Bayern!), Richards is back from a year in Greece and impressing in preseason. With Montiel gone, Forest could use more bodies at full/wing back, so he could get a chance ⭐️⭐️
Sepp van den Berg (D, LIV) - With Matip gone and no signings imminent, VDB (not that one!) is getting a chance to claim the 4th/5th CB role. 11 GPP90 (5.4 aerials/90!) make him worth keeping an eye on⭐️⭐️
Jeremy Sarmiento (F, BHA) - Yet another tricky, dribbly young (21) Brighton winger. He played well to help Ipswich get promoted (12.7 PP90, 12 starts). He likely needs a Prem loan to be relevant. ⭐️⭐️
Cameron Archer (F, AVL) - An auto-buyback upon Sheffield United relegation leaves Archer the 3rd string (at least) striker. If Duran goes, backup to Ollie Watkins is a potentially decent role. ⭐️⭐️
Chiquinho (F, WOL) - Cracking 20 starts in Portugal on loan, the 24yo has a chance to stake a claim in preseason, particularly if we see some outgoings (Sarabia, Neto, etc.). ⭐️⭐️
Pour One Out: Transferred Out Players
Douglas Luiz: Probably one of the sadder PSR-needed sales out of the Prem, Luiz coming of a great season (9 G, 5A, 9.6 PPS in 35 starts) and 5 straight seasons of 28+ starts (and 33+ games played) left for Juve
Said Benrahma: The mercurial Algerian winger who went in and out of Moyes's and fantasy managers' good graces (but mostly out) has finally left for France. Two almost 300 point seasons leave a solid DraftPL legacy
Hakim Ziyech: The wand of a left foot, the super promising stats for Ajax, Chelsea's constant need for a capable right wing, and yet the Moroccan never quite found his footing in the Prem, and finally he's off on a free to Turkey
Bertrand Traore: El Ghazi lite, the not often seen shot-hungry Villa winger, had 1 great fantasy year in 20/21 putting up 326 points in 29 starts before injuries, loans, and Villa getting good, took their toll
Omari Forson: The United youngster got his first start last season (and ended on a whopping 2 points)
Ben Godfrey, Thilo Kehrer, Morgan Sanson, Alvaro Fernandez: No memorial needed
