Determining how much of your budget you should spend on a given player during an auction draft is a tricky prospect. You may find that you need to stretch a bit beyond your initial valuation for the most premium fantasy assets. But you'll also realize that plenty of players are available for less than you had planned as the auction winds down. Our Auction Player Value Cheat Sheet provides you with a starting point of suggested low-end and high-end values based on your auction budget. Fantrax Default Scoring Player Values for Auction Drafts
With some help from Drafterthoughts, I have pulled together a spreadsheet (linked below) that combines my multiple years of experience with auction drafts and our Draft Society Consensus Rankings to establish tiers of approximate valuations for more than 200 players. My hope is that you’ll find this sheet useful as a pre-draft tool to experiment with various budget scenarios and establish your own specific player valuations to take into your draft. Then, come draft day, you’ve got a fully customized sheet you can use to keep track of which players remain and how much you’d be willing to spend to roster them when the auction gets underway.
Note: The valuations in this sheet are based on Fantrax Default Scoring and assume you are creating a 16-player roster. Feel free to reach out to me on Twitter if you have questions on valuations for a different league setup.
Using the Auction Values Cheat Sheet
Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of how to use this cheat sheet to customize player values based on the specifics of your league:
Initial Setup
Download the spreadsheet (also linked at the bottom of this page) and click File>Make a copy so you can make edits to your own file
In the Budget Calculator section pinned to the left side of the spreadsheet, add your Total Auction Budget in Column B. You should see the numbers next to each player update based on what you enter.
[Optional] If your league allows you to roll over unused funds from the auction into your Free Agent Budget (FAB), add the amount of your budget you’d like to roll over in the FAB Rollover Target section. This amount will be subtracted from your total budget and reflected in the Budget Remaining section.
Selecting Players
Once your budget settings are added, you’re ready to begin experimenting with player values. The players have been organized into tiers based on their approximate value range, or how much of your budget you should plan on spending if you’d like to win the bid for that player to join your roster. Each player has a Low and High value that is automatically calculated based on your Total Auction Budget.
If you’d like to see how adding a particular player impacts your budget, check the corresponding “Add?” box to the right of the value you’d like to use. When you do this, you’ll see that the Budget Calculator automatically updates to reflect your selection, and will show you how much of your budget has been spent, how much remains, and the number of players you’ve selected. Make sure you only check one box per player.
Use this process to experiment with how many players you’d like to target from each tier to make up your squad. Keep in mind that there will be many players available in the late stages for close to the minimum bid. This is also a good opportunity to identify your flex players you’d be willing to break your valuation for. I’d recommend making those players bold in the spreadsheet so they stand out.
Customizing Player Values
After you’ve experimented and gotten a sense of the strategy you’re planning on using in your auction draft, you can start getting more specific with your player valuations.
For example, if your auction budget is $100, you’ll find that the Tier 1 players all have value ranges of $36 - $45. But you may be willing to spend more than that for Mohamed Salah, and perhaps not as much for Harry Kane. You can update the number in any of the cells to fit your specific valuation for any individual player, and the Budget Calculator will reflect the value you enter.
Keep in mind this will overwrite the formula in place, so if you make changes to your Total Auction Budget, you’ll need to revert back to using the formula. You can either undo changes until you get back to where you were, or you can highlight an adjacent cell that uses the formula and drag from the bottom right corner to the cell you’d like to update.
You can also add additional rows or players to any of the tiers if you’d like to move players around or add players that aren’t currently accounted for (primarily new signings, though there are some late round punts like Kostas Tsimikas and Ross Barkley not represented on this sheet). Just highlight the last row of cells for the tier you’d like to add a player to and drag down from the rightmost cell to extend the tier and corresponding values/checkboxes.
Hopefully this cheat sheet will prove to be a valuable resource for your auction draft. We’d love to hear any feedback on how it can be improved moving forward. Now go win some bids!
