Fantasy Forecast

Past is prelude, as they say. So, turning to the 24/25 season, we've got Wolves player projections, key players to keep an eye on, players we're staying away from, question marks surrounding the club at this moment, an analysis of the Black Country club's early-season fixtures, and our predicted starting lineup.

24/25 Player Projections

Below, you'll find our season projections for Wolves fantasy assets. Our projections are created using a number of contributing factors such as historical performances, expected team strength, betting odds and more. ProjPPS (Points Per Start) and ProjFPts (Projected Total Points) refer to Fantrax Default Scoring.

The sad truth is that there only a handful of attractive Wolves assets that are set and forget - the rest are streamers at best. Matheus Cunha leads the pack(pun very much intended), ever so slightly, coming off a breakthrough campaign in 23/24 and due to crack on this season. Pedro Neto, lags just slightly behind and if he could stay fit to save his life/career he'd even be ahead. Someone who stepped up in Neto's very length absence, Pablo Sarabia, is a prolific midfielder but it's TBD whether he can get enough starts to be viable. The rest of the midfielders - e.g., Mario Lemina - fall into the high end streamer category and not worth drafting. And none of the defenders, as you'll see below, warrant a punt in the draft, even with the kinder defensive stat changes. The new striker signing, Jorgen Strand Larsen, will be intriguing as he looks to break the curse at Molineux for number nines. But he will likely be goal-dependent and streaky. We assume Hwang Hee Chan is moved on this summer, as reported, but if he stays, he could start - at least initially - in front of the Norwegian.

Players to Watch

We've highlighted some Wolves players that we're keeping an eye on. The players mentioned below may be sleepers. They may be up-and-coming youngsters. They may be vying for a spot in the XI. Whatever the case, we'll tell you why we're watching these particular assets in EPL Draft Fantasy this year.

Pablo Sarabia

Position: MID

23/24 Points: 260.5 (41st best MID)

23/24 Points Per Start: 10.1 (20 starts)

Recommended Draft Pick: 100 - 110 (12 Team League: Rounds 9 or 10)

Analysis: The diminutive Spaniard wasn't the stepfather, he was the father that stepped up. He filled with aplomb the creative and set piece vacancy left by his Iberian cousin. Pedro Neto effectively only played from August-late October; in his absence, Pablo Sarabia pitched in with some crucial attacking returns, including a purple patch in the festive season in which he notched 3 assists in 4 games. So he proved his bonafides to Gary O'Neil after largely underwhelming under Lopetegui. Does that matter if Neto is fit and firing?

Well, as you'll see below, Neto is rarely fit and he could even depart for pastures new. This would theoretically reopen the door for Sarabia to get some meaningful minutes - and fantasy points. But it might not be that easy. Surely if they get some decent cash, they'll have to reinvest it in a replacement - this may be Rodrigo Gomes (see more below) - who could also displace Sarabia and leave him as a super sub or plan b. And there are also rumors that he'll be moved on this summer. He's no spring chicken and he is likely on fairly high wages that Wolves may want to get off the books for a cheaper youngster. This uncertainty makes Sarabia a later round punt that could pay off handsomely if he nails back down his spot.

Jorgen Strand Larsen

Position: FWD

23/24 Points: N/A

23/24 Points Per Start: N/A

Recommended Draft Pick: 140 -150 (12 Team League: Rounds 12 or 13)

Analysis: As is noted below, Wolves have had a lot of trouble filling the sizable boots of peak of Raul Jimenez up top. Jorgen Strand Larsen, new signing from Celta Vigo in Spain, is the latest attempt to do so. The lanky Norwegian is strong in the air and with his back to goal but also can run the channels - a good foil for Cunha and target for someone like Sarabia or Neto. He bagged a respectable 13 goals and 3 assists in starts for Celta Vigo last season. Fantasy-wise, this translated to 8.7 PPS & 5.3 GPPS. While he will likely be a goal-dependent, he could have some games in which his aerials and shots on target provide a decent amount of ghost points. If Hwang stays in the Black Country, he'll have some competition for the starting striker spot. If not, it should be his to lose. A lot will depend on how he adjusts to the Premier League and if he stay fit (historically not a problem for him but, again, the Wolves # 9 curse is real). He should be a decent late round flyer if you need FWD depth.

Honorable Mention: The latest Portuguese youngster to take the well worn path from Iberia to the West Midlands, Rodrigo Gomes will join the Wolves firs team this summer. A Sporting Braga academy (like Pedro Neto), he is a dynamic winger that could possibly take over the reins. The 20 year old delivered 17 G/A at Estoril in Portugal last season. He's one for the future but the future could be soon if he is as good as expected.

Players to Avoid

It's not all sunshine and rainbows at Molineux. At least, not as far as Draft Fantasy Football is concerned. Below, we will also highlight some fantasy assets that we're not so thrilled about. These are the Wolves players you might want to avoid come draft day.

All Wolves Defenders

Position: DEF

23/24 Points: N/A

23/24 Points Per Start: N/A

Recommended Draft Pick: N/A

Analysis: This recommendation is pretty straightforward. No Wolves defender can be trusted. None of them score well and thus are not worthy of your consideration in the draft. Last season, not a single Wolves defender eclipsed 6.5 PPS: Dawson (6.4); Ait Nouri (5.7); Kilman (5); Semedo (3.7). The defensive tactics even shackled erstwhile ghost point God Matt Doherty. The slightly more favorable scoring for defenders will not save this sad lot. Stay well away from them.

Pedro Neto

Position: FWD

23/24 Points: 263 (28th best FWD)

23/24 Points Per Start: 13.1 (18 starts)

Recommended Draft Pick: 80 - 90 (12 Team League: Rounds 7 or 8)

Analysis: This guy is infuriatingly good. He's great in real life, incredibly fun to watch, scores fantasy points in bunches, but is insufferably unreliable. He boasted a top 20 PPS and delivered 11 G/A - despite only mustering 18 starts. Imagine if he could replicate this form over an entire season. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to do so given the recent history. If one removes the 20/21 campaign, Neto can claim only 11 starts per season since he burst onto the EPL scene.

These risks should be priced in, just as they were in most drafts last time out - he should be drafted at a similar stage of the draft, a post-Round 7 punt. But this isn't the case. The brilliant start to 23/24 has folks hoping for the best and not fearing the worst. And then there is the prospect of a transfer away from the West Midlands, which would likely dent his fantasy prospects. He would go from talisman to potential rotation piece. Yet a move to a better team would further over-inflate his perceived value and average draft position. We're not falling for it again.

Question Marks

Not everything is crystal clear and predictable at Wolves . We've highlighted some questions surrounding the team that we’re grappling with this preseason. We’ll try to note whether or not (and how much) these questions are affecting our perceptions of Wolves' fantasy assets.

Will Pedro Neto Stay?

Despite only managing 18 starts, the Portuguese still pitched in with 11 G/A and was a key cog in the system when on the pitch. No doubt his injury issues negatively impacted results. But is it better for Wolves to cut their losses, cash in, and refunnel that money into a hopefully more reliable replacement? His fitness issues have rightly put off potential suitors thus far and if Wolves want to move on from Neto, they will likely need to deflate their 60+ million pound asking price. How the front office deals with this potential transfer will give us a good idea of what to expect from Wolves this season. Fantasy-wise, a departure would dent Neto's prospects (assuming he is not a regular starter/the key creative outlet on his new side), help Sarabia (if the Spaniard ends up staying himself), and make way for a potentially attractive fantasy asset in the form of Neto's replacement (if they do indeed bring in someone else to fill the void or give youngster Rodrigo Gomes a shot). Stay tuned.

How Will The New Striker Adapt?

A curse only fully understood by Chelsea supporters, Wolves have been extremely unlucky at the number nine position since Raul Jimenez's fateful head injury in 2020. No less than Willian Jose, Fabio Silva, Patrick Cutrone, Diego Costa, and Sasa Kalajdzic have all subsequently tried and failed to take up the mantle and make the number nine position their own. Poor Kalajdzic tore his ACL in his first game in September 2022. You can't make this stuff up. In fairness, Hwang Hee Chan has done well in spells - especially during his purple patch last season - but it hasn't been enough.

Enter Viking God Jorgen Strand Larsen, the latest warlock brought in to break the spell. Yes, that's his actual name and, yes, he has already started talking trash to fellow Norwegian Erling Haaland about how he's going to light up the EPL. We've collectively been burnt so many times that we need to have a healthy amount of skepticism regarding his prospects. But hope springs eternal. Cunha came good last campaign and Larsen could follow in his footsteps. He will be key to whether or not Wolves can crack on from 23/24 and further improve their goal tally.

Which Version of Gary O'Neil's Wolves Will Show Up?

When Gary O'Neil took over from Lopetegui last September, there were yet again some lazy predictions that Wolves would be relegated. He allayed fears and almost immediately got them playing like a well oiled machine. This ultimately gave way to stasis and they petered out towards the end of the campaign. Injuries to Neto, Hwang, and then Cunha certainly did not help. But they looked like a different outfit in April compared to October.

With a season under his belt and a healthy roster, including a brand new number nine, will O'Neil deliver the best version of last season's Wolves this season? O'Neil has proven that he can get a tune out of a - let's be real - mediocre squad. He dramatically improved the attack and returned the prospect of goals to a starving Molineux. With very little investment and potential injuries, it will be difficult to improve upon 23/24 results. With a little luck, however, they can be a very dangerous side and contend with anyone.

Early-Season Fixture Difficulty

The way that teams come out the gate has big implications in EPL Draft. A red-hot start creates red-hot trade targets. A dismal start means plummeting player values and losses for your fantasy team. Check out our thoughts on Wolves' early-season fixtures and our analysis of the fantasy implications they will have.

Wolverhamton Wanderers Fixture Difficulty Premier League 24/25 Season
The colors represent fixture difficulty by position with red being most difficult and green being most favorable. The numbers represent the avg. fantasy points (in Fantrax Default Scoring) scored by players in that position.

This is a pretty brutal way to start the campaign for Wolves. Chelsea at home and Forest away are decent fixtures but away to Arsenal and Villa are two of the most difficult matchups in the league. And Newcastle should be a lot better than last season. If you're drafting for early fixtures, this is not the team for it. But thankfully the schedule softens a bit after this early stretch and you might be able to buy relatively low on Wolves assets after the trip to Villa Park.

24/25 Wolves Predicted Lineup

Based on the information we have now, the below graphic is our best prediction for the eventual long-term Wolves lineup in 24/25. We can't account for any last minute transfers or injuries, but considering managerial tactics, player form, and availability, this is how we see Wolves' XI shaking out.

Wolves Predicted Lineup

O'Neil often fielded a back 3 last season but has publicly come out in favor of reverting a back 4 this season to add some attacking bite. So we'll take him at his word. O'Neil used a pressing 4-4-2 in his first game in last season's opener v Man United. He could be thinking something similar. Sa between the sticks, Ait-Nouri slots in at LB, the departure of Kilman opens it up for Toti (or a new signing), Dawson partners Toti, Semedo at RB, the two enforcers Mario Lemina & Joao Gomes, Bellegarde or Sarabia on one wing, Neto or Rodrigo Gomes (the younger one) or new signing on the other wing, with Cunha and new boy Strand Larsen (or Hwang, if he stays) up top. This is a tough one to predict - pay attention to preseason - but this should be about right.
