Fantasy EPL Gameweek 24 Sleepers XI
For this article, we use the percentage rostered calculation from Fantrax and Sleeper. Our only rule is that each player we highlight is rostered in 60% of leagues or fewer at the time of writing. Therefore, there's a good chance some of these players will be free agents in your Draft league! As always, we'll take form, fixtures, projected points, and a healthy dose of intuition into account to make our selections.
Our GW23 Sleepers XI got a decent 82.75 FPts score in the end. Acceptable but with a few better picks, we could have hit our 100 FPts mark! Time to look under the hood again.
For our GK pick we went with Kinsky thinking that Spurs might be able to keep a clean sheet versus a struggling Leicester team and lo and behold, Spurs outdid themselves. Not only did the North London club concede 2 goals, they ended up losing the game after taking the lead. Therefore Kinsky ended up on a measly 2.75 FPts - sigh. Thankfully we went with only one Spurs defender as well! Speaking of defenders, we picked a back-5 again. All five picks played 90 minutes each, with only Harry Maguire keeping a clean sheet and ending up with 14.5 FPts. Three of the others conceded 1 goal each, with Jan-Paul van Hecke scoring 11.75 Fpts, Livramento getting 7 FPts and Castagne finishing on 4 FPts. A bit of a mixed bag of scores really. Finally, as mentioned before, we had another Spurs pick in Ben Davies, who ended the gameweek with a 7.75 FPts score despite conceding the aforementioned 2 goals. In midfield we had 3 players with only one of our picks, Mateus Fernandes, playing 90 minutes. Despite him picking up the yellow card, 9.25 FPts is a great score for someone with no attacking returns. However we did get a goal from Jacob Ramsey who scored 17.5 FPts but was subbed off after 72 minutes of play. Lastly we had Norgaard, who was supposed to be our safe pick, but he was surprisingly subbed off after 53 minutes and only scored 3.25 FPts - maybe something to take note of for future gameweeks. This meant that we went with two FWD picks. Keane Lewis-Potter played the full match and got a yellow card with no attacking returns, meaning he ended up on 2.25 FPts, while Minteh was subbed on in the 75th minute and did the exact same thing.
Again 82.75 FPts wasn't a terrible score but we're back to the drawing board with the hope of breaking that lofty century mark. So let's see what we can come up with as we enter our first double gameweek of the season.
The Sleepers XI table below includes a full team of Starters, as well as 5 Reserves - high-upside players with some question marks around whether or not they'll start in Gameweek 23. So keep an eye out when lineups are announced and pick them up if you see them starting, especially if you need to fill a spot on your roster. Read below for the rationale behind each of the Starter selections.
Christian Walton (G, Ipswich)
We obviously have to punt in a fixture that involves Southampton. So why not bank on the possibility of a clean sheet. This is a must-win fixture for the Tractor Boys but their record of late has not been that great. In the last 4 games, both Southampton and Ipswich Town have conceded the most goals (14). Lest we forget, Ipswich did come up against the likes of Man City and Liverpool, who put 10 goals past them combined. So it's a bit harsh to judge them over such a small window. Don't forget this is the same team that beat Chelsea 2-0! If Ipswich Town can muster a similar performance, they'll need Walton to keep the Saints out of their net as the South Coast club are still fighting tooth and nail to stay in the League.
Dara O'Shea (D, Ipswich)
If we're going with Walton, then we're doubling down with Dara. His past two scores of -3.5 and -7.5 are not a great look, but up next O'Shea and his teammates are hosting Southampton, the team that has scored the fewest goals (16) in the league so far. O'Shea's 8.4 gPPS is also one of the best of all Ipswich DEFs, which is only 0.1 shy of top performers like Greaves. So if you need a DEF-3 and you weren't able to snag an Everton double gameweek asset, O'Shea could be a great single game option for this weekend.
Harry Maguire (D, Man Utd)
According to our fixture difficulty tracker, outside of the teams with the double gameweek fixtures, Manchester United have the 2nd best fixture rating for all defenders in the league this gameweek. The Red Devils might have been a bit fortunate with their clean sheet win in GW23 against Fulham, but now they come up against an Eze-less Crystal Palace. The Eagles have played 4 games without their talisman this season and had 2 losses and 2 draws. This bodes well for Manchester United, who are trying to build some consistency in the league as they try to achieve a respectable finish in the table come the end of the season.
Jarrad Branthwaite (D, Everton)
It seems a bit shocking that a player like Branthwaite would be available in leagues on the eve of a double gameweek. Sure the latter fixture versus their Merseyside rivals Liverpool would definitely be a fixture you avoid on its own, but the first game versus Leicester feels like a clean sheet banker. In the last 8 games, Leicester have only scored 4 goals, the fewest of all the teams in the league, and this includes the pair of goals from their shock 2-1 win over Spurs. Pickford and co. have the 2nd most clean sheets (8) in the league so far, tied with Arsenal, so there's no reason they can't add to it this weekend against the Foxes.
Jacob Ramsey (M, Aston Villa)Â
After suggesting Jacob Ramsey in last week's Sleeper XI article, he rewarded us with the highest score in our XI, a 17.5 FPts haul which included the lone goal for Villa. So naturally we're going to suggest the young Lion's name again, especially for the West Midlands derby. Wolves will be without Joao Gomes in GW24, a key cog in their engine room, especially from a defensive perspective, which means there is a chance that Aston Villa find some joy in this fixture. Aston Villa will be absolutely bouncing at the moment after their big 4-2 win against Celtic in the Champions League in midweek as well as qualifying for the Round of 16 games without any convoluted extra play-off game. Jacob Ramsey had another good performance that night where he bagged 2 assists for a pair of Rogers' hattrick haul. So if Villa are to score a few more goals in GW24, Ramsey could run riot again.
James Garner (M, Everton)Â
Many Liverpool and Everton assets are probably highly owned in your leagues which means we're going to have to find a differential that could have potentially gone under the radar. James Garner could be that guy. If you're in need of a MID-4/5, there's a chance Garner could get 2 starts this gameweek, especially with the likes of Orel Mangala being ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury he picked up in the last few moments of their GW23 game against Brighton. Although Garner has only started 2 games this season, his 6.6 PPS is the 3rd best of all Everton MIDs, which is a similar ranking for his 7.1 gPPS. So we're expecting around 10-12 FPts from Garner for this double gameweek, which is a more than acceptable total for the 10th or 11th man in your roster.
Julio Enciso (M, Ipswich)
Enciso, one of Brighton's most exciting attacking prospects over the past couple of seasons - or when he was fit at least, is now on loan to relegation scrappers Ipswich Town, in an attempt to secure more playing time in a less crowded kitchen. It might have been too much for the Paraguayan to start his first game for the Tractor Boys against Liverpool, but he did come on as a substitute for the last 10 minutes of the game. One thing that immediately stood out during his cameo was that he took 2 of the 4 corners that Ipswich had all game, which is how he managed to get his assist for Greaves' goal. Southampton in GW24 is a must-win game for either team as they both fight for survival in the Premier League, so this is a great fixture for Enciso to get his first start and open his account for his new yet temporary employers.
Kevin Schade (M, Brentford)
We should have guessed that Schade would have been given the start last gameweek against Crystal Palace, given the fact that Thomas Frank tends to swap between 2-FWD and 3-FWD player systems, based on the difficulty of their opponent. This was Schade's 11th start of the campaign and he scored his 6th goal along with a 20 FPts haul. This now means that Schade's 11.6 PPS is the highest of all Brentford MIDs, but he seems to be fairly return dependant as his 5.5 gPPS is not the best of his teammates. That being said, the Bees are playing Spurs, the 18th worst team in the league over the last 10 games. Spurs conceded 23 goals in this period, which is only better than the likes of Southampton. So there's a very good chance that Brentford score a few goals in this fixture.
Adama Traore (F, Fulham)
Harry Wilson was absolutely flying for Fantrax managers as well as IRL Marco Silva. However, as we had feared, when the Welsh MID got subbed during the GW23 fixture against Manchester United, the injury he sustained turned out to be worse than expected and now Wilson has been ruled out for the next 8-10 weeks. Reiss Nelson, who had taken over the role previously, is still building his fitness back from his own injury so that doesn't leave Marco Silva with many options for the RW position in his system. This means it's time to break out the baby oil as Adama Traore is being expected to be given a run of starts again, at least until the likes of Reiss Nelson is back. An easy FWD-2/3 starter for any roster.
Hwang Hee-Chan (F, Wolves)Â
In GW23, there was yet another injury, as Strand Larsen was subbed off in the first half due to a hamstring injury which means the Norwegian could be set to have a spell on the sidelines for at least a month. Hwang came on as the substitute and had a surprisingly great ghost point performance in his 57 minute appearance. The South Korean scored 7.5 FPts, which included 1 shot on target, 1 key pass, 2 tackles won and an aerial. Hwang typically has one of the worst PPS of all Wolves FWDs but given he's only started 5 games this season, it would be quite harsh to judge him on such a small sample size. Despite these numbers, this seems like a good week to bet on him as there's a chance Aston Villa could be susceptible to conceding a few goals or slipping up given they played midweek and are missing key defenders like Matty Cash due to injuries.
Omar Marmoush (F, Man City)Â
New boy on the block, Omar Marmoush, Manchester City's first Egyptian player, was thrown into the deep end by Pep and was given his first start of the campaign right after signing for the Champions. Eye-test wise it was a really promising performance against Chelsea, and some would say he was unlucky not to get his goal for the season. Barring some offside calls, Marmoush definitely looks like a menace in that Man City attack and seemed to fit right into Pep's system. In 73 minutes, Omar managed to score 5 FPts, which included 1 key pass, 2 tackles won and 1 ACNC. Given he is ineligible to play for Man City in the Champions League, we're expecting him to start more games than the likes of Doku etc. in the Premier League, as Man City attempt to finish in a top 4 spot by the end of this season.
