Gameweek 28 Ghost Point Hunters: Fantrax EPL

We ain’t afraid of no ghosts. In fact, we seek them – ghost points, that is. Ghost points are fantasy points that do not come from attacking returns or clean sheets. These can come in the form of key passes, shots on target, successful dribbles, interceptions, and tackles, among others. Identifying these points is essential for your Fantasy EPL prospects, and our Gameweek 28 Ghost Point Hunters article is here to help!

Gameweek 28 Ghost Point Hunters

Here we are - GW28 when only a select few (mighty Luton Town & Bournemouth) have doubles. But we're continuing to stay a step ahead of your league mates. We covered the DGW two weeks ago, now we're looking toward the blankpocalypse yet again. Every player highlighted will play in GW29. We start with Edson 'El Machin' Alvarez, Wilson Odobert, & Sergio Reguilon. On the Honorable Mention tip is Alphonse Areola, Leon Bailey, Mohammed Kudus, & Carlton Morris. Finally, we grant the Dr. Peter Venkman Award to Calvin Bassey, who despite not blanking in GW29 should still be avoided. We'll explain.

Edson Alvarez

Position: Midfielder

Team: West Ham United

Rostered: 14%

Ghost Points Per Start: 5.6

Ghost Points Last GW: 18

Prospects: When Declan Rice made the move northwest over the summer, there was a huge hole to fill in the West Ham engine room. Enter Edson Alvarez, a 30 million plus pound transfer from Ajax. Dubbed "The Machine", he has struggled at times but seems to have found his feet in his debut season in the EPL. Fantasy-wise, he has largely shown CDM numbers with the ability to drop some CDM+ performances every now and again. Lately, Alvarez & West Ham have been in fine form after the return of Paqueta. Alvarez paired a cheeky goal with a mouthwatering 18 ghosties this past GW against Everton. The scary scores stemmed from 2 Shots on Target, 2 Tackles Won, 5 Interceptions, 3 Clearances, 4 Successful Dribbles, & 3 Blocked Shots - an all action performance. He is unlikely to go for 27 points again anytime soon but he's great to have for the near term. Alvarez has Burnley this weekend and does not blank the following GW, making him a decent option this weekend and then a must stream in GW29. Orale!

Verdict: Pick him up now if you have the room - can use as cover or a late start this GW and then a reliable MID3 in the blank GW.

Wilson Odobert

Position: Forward

Team: Burnley

Rostered: 18%

Ghost Points Per Start: 6.4

Ghost Points Last GW: 14

Prospects: Burnley can feel hard done by this season. They have dominated teams in stretches before capitulating and letting in goals like a sieve. This past GW against Bournemouth was a microcosm of their season - putting the Cherries to the sword for 30+ minutes, failing to convert a few chances before letting in a silly goal. Odobert was one of those Clarets that was unlucky to not bag a goal over the weekend. The tricky winger has been a revelation this season. In a team largely barren fantasy-wise, he has been a bright spot in recent weeks. In GW27, he posted over a dozen ghosties from 4 Key Passes, 1 Shot on Target, 1 Tackle Won, 1 Accurate Cross Not a Corner (ACNC), 2 Successful Dribbles, & 1 Aerial. He is a decent FWD3 in most GWs but is a must roster if possible going into the blankpocalypse with streamable FWDs at a premium. Burnley host Brentford, who similarly possess a soft defensive underbelly. Pounce if you can.

Verdict: PICK HIM UP!

Sergio Reguilon

Position: Defender

Team: Brentford

Rostered: 3%

Ghost Points Per Start: 8.1

Ghost Points Last GW: 10.75

Prospects: The Spanish fullback has had an odd sabbatical in Blighty. He initially came over to Tottenham as a pretty highly touted talent. Regulion was pushed out by Antonio Conte, not given a chance by new manager Ange Postecoglu, loaned out to Man United, and was then loaned out again in January to Brentford. Historically, he is a high upside fantasy asset - his ability to get forward and nick assists make him dangerous. His 8+ GPPS this season proves he's still got it. The problem is that Brentford, as mentioned above, concede goals for fun, which drown out his potential. Regs racked up double digit ghosties again this past GW with 1 Key Pass, 2 Tackles Won, 2 Accurate Crosses Not Corners (ACNCs), 2 Interceptions, 1 Clearance, 1 Blocked Shot, & 2 Aerials. He also added an assist. But the 2 goals conceded dented what would've been a monster haul. ROS this matters but for the blank GW, it doesn't, Reguilon will be a sought after DEF with a tasty matchup with Burnley in GW29.

Verdict: Get him in! Bench v Arsenal but start against Burnley.

Honorable Mention:

  • Alphonse Areola (West Ham United GK; 22.25 ghosts): A saved penalty inflated his score this week but he has surprised us with his ghosting/saving ability this season. He's a ROS hold let alone must start in the blank GW. If he is available, pounce.

  • Leon Bailey (Aston Villa FWD; 15.5 ghosts): Another pleasant surprise has been the Jamaican winger. He's always had it in his locker to ball out but injuries and inconsistency has plagued him in England. This season he has finally put it all together. His recent ghosts have been the cherry on the top. We don't want to be facing him in GW29.

  • Mohammed Kudus (West Ham United MID; 11.5 ghosts): Talk about hitting the ground running. Kudus has survived Moyes and the mid-season Afcon disappointment with Ghana to put in some tasty performances. In addition to the attacking returns, he can ghost out of his mind. He's another that will be scary in the blank GW.

  • Carlton Morris (Luton Town FWD; 11.5 ghosts): The preseason pick of the litter for Luton Town, Morris has taken a backseat to Messrs Doughty & Barkley fantasy-wise. But he has proven his worth lately with some returns and some rare ghosts. With Adebayo out, Morris will continue to be the man; he should do the business in the blank.

Category Killers:

  • Key Passes: Bernardo Silva (7)

  • Successful Dribbles: Callum Hudson-Odoi (6)

  • Aerials: Dara O'Shea (6)

  • Accurate Crosses Not Corners (ACNCs): Mads Roerslev (4)

  • Tackles Won: Conor Bradley (4)

  • Interceptions: Christian Norgaard (6)

Dr. Peter Venkman Award:

Calvin Bassey (Fulham DEF; 1.75 ghosts): Any warm body will do in the blank GW, no? Well, yes, but some are better than others. One Calvin Bassey just pulled off the rare feat of scoring less than 8 points with a cleansheet. How did he do it? He only mustered 1 Tackle & 3 Clearances to go along with the cleanie. Unfortunately this is par for the course for someone who only boasts a GPPS of less than 6. Bassey should be getting more aerials and other points but seems to be second fiddle to whomever he is partnering with at CB - in this case, Tosin Aradabioyo. Bassey indeed is a DEF who plays in GW29 and should be available on your waiver wire but there are better options. Let him marinate on this humiliation and get his act together before seeing him as a viable defensive streamer.
