Southampton Sleepers
As noted above, these are potential Fantrax Sleepers from Southampton. These Fantasy EPL players are likely to be drafted in the later rounds. Read below for two under the radar players who could provide excellent value in your pre-season draft.
Mohamed Salisu
Position: Defender
21/22 Points: 231.5 (25th best defender)
21/22 Points Per Start: 7.2 (32 starts)
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 6.8 (29 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 170 or later (12 Team League: Round 15 or later)
Overview: Southampton's rock at the back will be ready to do battle in a seriously understaffed back line, which other than Salisu does not offer much in terms of fantasy relevance.
As far as sleepers go, Salisu is a deep deep sleeper. I could even go as far as saying he is on the precipice of being an undrafted player. He had a great spell mid-season in 21/22 when he was a ghost point beast and a perpetual mainstay in many of our Sleepers XI and Waiver articles. But for large stretches of the season, his IRL & fantasy form was not very impressive. A run of five 10+ point games in October and November were only replicated in a few other games (vs NOR and EVE and a memorable one against Man City). However, Salisu did manage to sneakily deliver 63% Quality Starts, which is comparable to Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, Ben Davies, and surprisingly Reece James (although his were mostly in the Q90, whereas Momo's were mostly in the Q50 and Q75 territory). So while he is not a stellar performer, Salisu will provide above average points for your fantasy team in most weeks. His 10.3 ghost points per start also suggests that if Southampton can somehow start collecting Clean Sheets, he will immediately shoot up in value. An enormous "if", however.
Joe Aribo
Position: Midfielder
21/22 Points: 128
21/22 Points Per Start: 10.4 (13 starts) in the Europa League
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 8.1 (19 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 170 or later (12 Team League: Round 14 or later)
Overview: A new signing from Rangers, Aribo fits the mold of a Southampton signing to a tee - versatile, attacking, relatively unknown.
Aribo arrives after a successful season with Rangers that ultimately ended in heartbreak in their first European final in decades. He dropped 8 goals and 3 assists in the Scottish Premier League whilst playing a number of positions, including but not limited to: forward, right winger, attacking midfielder, and central midfielder. His main attributes include being in or above the 77th percentile among wingers for Pressing, Interceptions, Clearances, Aerials and Blocks. It remains to be seen how quickly he will adapt to the rigors of the Premier League, but he is worth consideration as a late round punt if you are looking for an under the radar midfielder with decent upside.
Honorable Mention:
Jan Bednarek is the unfortunate holder of an unwanted Fantrax record - lowest fantasy score ever - which he accomplished largely through an own goal and a red card in the same game. However, he is a decent CB with sporadically serviceable Fantrax scores, so once (if) the Southampton defence solidifies and manages to go on a run of decent games, he is definitely worth monitoring.
