Spurs Sleepers
As noted above, these are potential Fantrax Sleepers from Tottenham. These Fantasy EPL players are likely to be drafted in the later rounds. Read below for three under the radar players who could provide excellent value in your pre-season draft.
Cristian Romero
Position: Defender
21/22 Points: 150.5 (57th best defender)
21/22 Points Per Start: 7.1 (21 starts)
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 7.4 (32 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 97 - 120 (12 Team League: Round 9-10 )
Overview: Romero had a very hit or miss debut season with Spurs. He struggled with injuries, and showed glimpses of form, but never was able to be consistent enough on the pitch or in fantasy. Under Conte he improved massively, and ended the season strongly. He should be a mainstay in Conte's backline this season, but be weary of both his recklessness and injury record when drafting him. I think he is a top tier DEF3 this season, but will offer DEF2 upside in most games. Spurs signing another defensive asset will help Romero with the likelihood that Davies/Dier will be the ones to be replaced.
I would look to draft Romero in round 9, due to his inconsistency and injury record. He should be the first Spurs CB off the board, but be sure to have a "safer" DEF1/2 when drafting in Romero.
Rodrigo Bentancur
Position: Midfielder
21/22 Points: 125 (92nd best midfielder)
21/22 Points Per Start: 7.7 (16 starts)
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 7.7 (29 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 133 or later (12 Team League: Round 12 or later)
Overview: Bentancur was signed in January, and became a mainstay for Conte ever since. He offered sneaky MID5 value, but also ended the season with three double digit performances in a row. Bissouma has signed for Spurs, which could mean Bentancur plays even slightly more advanced leaving most of the defensive duties to his partner. I would seriously consider taking a gamble on Bentancur as a MID5/6 after round 12. If he is able to offer some more attacking returns he could become an every week set and forget type midfielder. He should get the bulk of EPL starts as well, making him a good backup if you drafted a higher risk type team.
Bentancur in the 12th will offer some sneaky value. He should be able to show more of what he is capable after a full pre-season with Conte and his new team. Hojberg is still in the picture but should only offer cover to both Bentancur and Bissouma. For what it's worth I would look to punt on Bentancur before Bissouma in drafts.
Ryan Sessegnon
Position: Defender
21/22 Points: 114.5 (80th best defender)
21/22 Points Per Start: 7.2 (34 starts)
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 7.6 (11 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 133 or later (12 Team League: Round 12 or later)
Overview: Sessegnon had a very strong end to the season, and became the first choice LWB for Conte. Perisic has just signed, and he should overtake Sessegnon for that role, but I do expect Sessegnon to put up a fight and steal some EPL minutes from Perisic. Sessegnon is significantly younger than Perisic, and form depending he could be given a run in the side. Reguillon is also on his way out after being left out of the pre-season travel. Sess is now classified as a defender and has the attacking prowess to offer DEF1 upside when he starts. He is worth punting on late on in drafts especially to see how Spurs lineup the first few games of the season. If he manages to steal early season minutes from Perisic for any reason, you could look to trade high on the defender.
Drafting a player with the upside of Sessegnon that late on in the draft really has no risk. Most players you draft after round 10 will be churned through the FA if they don't perform. Worst case, after GW3 you look to drop Sessegnon for a different asset. I would hold onto him if you do draft him though until at least GW3, and if you have the roster space even as long as GW5 to see if Conte sticks with Perisic week in and week out.
Honorable Mention(s):
Ben Davies is worth a mention if he continues to get LCB minutes. He managed 8.1 points per start last year, and was tremendous under Conte. Look for him to start the season, and be value anywhere after round 9. Spurs have signed Lenglet from Barcelona to compete with him for the LCB spot, but Davies has been quite solid for some time and should hold onto his position in the near future at least.
