Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Brighton
Find below all the details on how we think Brighton will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
Brighton Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
Trying to predict a Graham Potter starting XI is like trying to predict the path of a tornado: you'll probably end up being wrong and it will probably catch up with you pretty quickly. Strained metaphors aside, last season we saw Potter use a variety of formations, a variety of tactics, and a variety of players in a variety of positions. That's not changing any time soon. So, the below graphic is our best attempt to distill all of Potter's favorite formations down into one catch-all.
We'll most often see a 3-5-2 (or a variation on it that looks more like a 3-4-2-1). In this formation, Potter's wingbacks do work near the sidelines and always offer value to draft managers. If City are unsuccessful in their attempt to acquire Marc Cucurella, he will almost always be that LWB. If he does depart, the Seagulls may replace him with a new signing. Tariq Lamptey, Solly March, and even sometimes Joel Veltman will occupy the opposite side. On the rare occasion that Cucurella is moved to LCB, March can also play LWB. Plus, it's not uncommon to see Leandro Trossard used there as well.
In the attack, Potter has been known to utilize both a single striker and a two-pronged attack, depending on the opposition. Danny Welbeck, who ended last season strong, would likely get the nod in a single-striker formation. However, Neal Maupay may also see minutes when Potter opts for 2 FWDs or when Welbeck needs rest and/or recovery. As the season wears on, we would not be surprised if new transfer Deniz Undav replaces the out-of-favor Maupay almost entirely, but that may take some time.
As far as the midfield is concerned, this is likely where we will see the most rotation from Potter. He has a batch of exciting young midfielders who all ended 21/22 in fine form. So, the manager will want to see what he's got in his squad. Expect Leandro Trossard, Pascal Gross and Alexis Mac Allister to start most matches, though their exact positions will vary. Moises Caicedo was also nailed on at the tail-end of last season, and shone when given the opportunity. Expect that to continue. This leaves a rotation nightmare for the likes of Enock Mwepu, Solly March, Adam Lallana, Steven Alzate, and Jakub Moder (once fit). Mwepu and March would be the only two of that lot we'd even remotely consider drafting.
