Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Wolves

Find below all the details on how we think Wolves will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.

Wolves Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View

Another squad with a lot of question marks, we come to Wolves. Manager Bruno Lage has a year under his belt. He tinkered a fair amount but kept the back 3/wingback system of his predecessor despite the prevailing sentiment that he might revert to his apparently favored 442 (albeit tweaked) system. All indications from preseason is that he will indeed shift to a 4 at the back system - insiders have indicated that Lage has largely been utilizing the 4231 formation outlined below. Whether he follows through with this transformation when the season starts is going to impact almost everything.

Based on this tweak, we're likely looking at the following: Kilman & new signing Nathan Collins as the two CBs, with Ait Nouri at LB (Marcal has done one back to Brazil ) & Semedo at RB (but Jonny likely starting the season there until Semedo is back fit), Neto & MGW on the left and right wings, and Podence just behind the lone striker, Jimenez. The mercurial winger Adama Traore is also still on the books but his contract is up next summer. Where he ends up is still a mystery at the time of writing. He has a very slim chance of staying at Wolves and coming into the team but it is definitely one to watch. MGW is also being linked away from Molineux and would cause some tweaks in the starting XI.

The midfield is really where much of the uncertainty reigns. Ruben Neves seemed almost certain to depart but many clubs have seemingly been put off by the hefty price tag. So as of now, he is still on the roster and would retain his critical role in the engine room. The other midfield role could be occupied by veteran Joao Moutinho, who just signed a short-term deal to extend his stay at the club. Wolves may still end up signing one or two central midfielders, especially if Neves departs, which could shake up the side. Regardless of how he sets up, Lage has to start getting a tune out of this squad or he could be one of the first out of a job this campaign.

UPDATE: Raul's injury in preseason makes a thin forward line even thinner, especially given that Wolves let Fabio Silva go on loan to Anderlecht. They will be forced to make a new signing or throw someone like Hwang or Podence as the #9 until Raul is back fit.
