Crystal Palace Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
Patrick Vieira has been an absolute revelation as a manager since taking the helm at Palace. More specifically, his tactical knowledge and formational nous have made his team hard to beat and harder to demoralize. The team now boasts a never-say-die attitude combined with a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities in the side. Vieira didn't take the easy route either. Instead, he has drilled his team in at least 3 different formations, all utilized against different opponents for different reasons. This means that our Predicted XI will require a bit more explanation, but that's why we're here!
The most-used formation by Vieira is a 4-3-3, which is what we've pictured below. However, we've tried to make it clear through the "substitutes" below each player that, in some cases, players may change position on the pitch depending on the formation. In defence, we're most likely to see Tyrick Mitchell and Nathaniel Clyne on the flanks (unless Wan-Bissaka comes home). Even in a 3-5-2, Mitchell and Clyne usually retain those wide positions as wingbacks. Rotation is a probability in the defence, as Joel Ward is a jack-of-many-trades and can come in for either of the CBs (Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen) or Clyne at times, too.
In midfield, Vieira's formational strategy can result in a wide variance in player positions, but not normally in the players taking the pitch. In the preferred 4-3-3, we'll likely see Eberechi Eze at LM, though his talents may be more needed at the RM slot vacated by Connor Gallagher. James McArthur will continue to provide strength centrally. And now that new boy Cheik Doucoure has signed, Vieira may opt for a double pivot (4-2-3-1) more often than he did last year. This would allow for that strong partnership of Doucoure and McArthur to be spelled by the other bit-part midfield options who have been lurking at Selhurst (Hughes, Milivojevic). Jeff Schlupp (if not McArthur) will occupy the LM spot if the 4-3-3 is favored.
Finally, the forward line has many iterations under Vieira, but all of them include Wilfried Zaha on the left wing. In a 4-3-3, Michael Olise will man the opposite wing, with Jordan Ayew allowing him the occasional breather. Olise can also slot in at RM in the aforementioned 4-2-3-1, pushing Eze to the #10 spot to match his shirt. The spearhead of this attack is truly up in the air at the moment. Fantasy managers are hoping for Odsonne Edouard to make amends with the manager and secure the spot, as his returns have been better than that of Jean-Philippe Mateta, though the latter ended last season as the manager's first choice. If we had to spend draft capital on one, it would be Edouard without question.
