Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Newcastle
Find below all the details on how we think Newcastle will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
Newcastle Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
Contrary to what many expected following a fairly busy January window, Newcastle’s new owners have been slow to add to their ranks so far this summer. Whenever a club gets an influx of cash at the scale that the Magpies now have in the wake of Mike Ashley’s departure, though, they have to contend with inflated prices from clubs who know they can technically afford the additional outlay. For that reason, it may be another window or two before we see a true marquee signing arrive at St. James’ Park. What business has been completed has been smart, with Eddie Howe finally getting his main central defender target in Sven Botman, securing the permanent signature of Matt Targett after a successful loan spell, and bringing in one of England’s best shot-stoppers in Nick Pope. Each of the three new arrivals should slot directly into the starting eleven, which is otherwise fairly settled.
The key areas to watch are at center back to see which of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn gets the starting role alongside Botman, and at right wing, where the majority of Newcastle’s current transfer rumors are focused. Howe seems keen on replacing Ryan Fraser sooner or later. It’s probably best to avoid those spots during the draft unless pre-season fixtures reveal a preference in Eddie Howe’s thinking. That hasn’t been the case so far, with the boss rolling out mixed lineups for each half in the first few warm-up matches. The most secure starters are the aforementioned trio of transfers, along with Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson. In matches against more difficult opposition, expect Sean Longstaff to be utilized at the base of midfield in Shelvey’s stead, while one of Jonjo or Joelinton could make way for Joe Willock in matches that allow for more attacking endeavor.
Editor's Note: Jonjo Shelvey has suffered a minor injury in pre-season, meaning one of Longstaff or Willock should see more time in the early stages of the season. Willock is a high-upside player who has performed well when he starts, so may be worth additional consideration in the late rounds of your draft. His inclusion would also see Bruno Guimaraes sitting in the holding role, which could negatively impact his fantasy output. Additionally, Miguel Almiron has put in some strong pre-season performances, and may currently have the edge over Fraser in Howe's plans to start the season.
