Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Leicester
Find below all the details on how we think Leicester will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
Leicester Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
I have said it many times. Rodgers seems like he is playing Football Manager with 2 tactical setups and he switches between one and the other only when his team is in trouble. Last season, he used some version of the 4-3-3 formation 29 times and a 5-3-2 nine times last season. Both formations solve different problems but the 4-3-3 seems to be the preferred formation as it gets the most out of his attacking talent. His 2 talismans, Vardy and Maddison, can play in their preferred positions, Vardy as a lone striker, running from behind the defensive line, and Maddison as a hybrid AM/RW cutting in from the right. It also allows Barnes bomb down the left and and combine with the left-sided number 8, Dewsbury Hall. in his preferred left-sided number 8 role. This formation, however, hinges on the other 2 midfield players, Ndidi & Tielemans. Ndidi is a beast and can operate as a single defensive midfielder with 2 centre backs behind him while Tielemans and Pereira/Castagne can cover the right side of the pitch.
The problems and uncertainty begin if/when Tielemans leaves and there is no other usable number 8 in the squad. Maddison then has to shift back into the midfield 3, leaving the RW spot open for a very questionable Ayoze or Albrighton. Ndidi's injury issues also throw a spanner into the works as Mendy and/or Soumare have proven they are not able to cope in the lone 6 positions. So either a double pivot has to be deployed, or the "other formation" is preferred, where the additional defensive solidity doesn't come from the double picot but from an extra centre back. Herein lies the issue with opting for 5-3-2 as the primary formation. The positives: It can cope with the loss of Tielemans and potentially Ndidi, and it allows Iheanacho, a natural second striker, to be involved. It also doesn't require depth at the winger spots (which they don't currently possess). However, there are also plenty of downsides: Maddison and Vardy are used in less effective positions (although still capable), Barnes (arguably one of the best players on the team) cannot start, and finally, and most importantly, the third CB position will be occupied by a player (Amartey/Soyuncu/Vestergaard) admittedly not able to otherwise challenge the starting 2 CBs.
The arrival of new wingers in the transfer window would underline my theory of the 4-3-3 being the preferred formation. Other than in the wing position, there is enough depth to successfully implement the 4-3-3 formation. And it is also worth noting that Daka should carve out a good amount of minutes at CF as Vardy's succession planning becomes the main aim for the season.
